Hearing Test
Hearing test is also referred as an audiological evaluation.
Hearing test is performed by a Hearing care professional (Audiologist/Audiometrist).
A comprehensive hearing test will tell you about how well you hear and what problems you have in your ear/hearing. A hearing care professional will discuss the following information:
- Degree of hearing loss.
- Type of hearing loss.
- Possible cause of hearing loss.
- Whether it can be treated medically or surgically or you need an amplification.
Hearing Test result discussion :
Magnitude: Is there a loss? If so, how severe?
Type: Conductive, sensorineural or mixed?
Configuration: Audiometric shape
Symmetry: comparison of right and left ears
Degree of hearing loss
- 0-15 dB Within normal limits
- 16-25 dB Slight
- 26-40 dB Mild
- 41-55 dB Moderate
- 56-70 dB Moderately severe
- 71-90 Severe
- 90+ Profound
The main types of hearing loss are :
- Conductive (involves outer or middle ear)
- Sensorineural (involves inner ear)
- Mixed (combination of the two)
Prevention
The following steps can help you prevent noise-induced hearing loss
- Protect your ears from loud noise ( at work/power tools)
- Regular hearing test.
- Avoid loud music.
